A $40 programmable thermostat with a consistent schedule will beat a $300 smart thermostat that's set to “same temperature all day.” At least, that's been my experience with commercial retrofits.
What should a cost-conscious buyer purchase first?
Here's the order I recommend after tracking six years of HVAC invoices:
- If you don't have a set-back schedule at all, get a basic programmable Honeywell Home thermostat first.
- If you need remote access and after-hours alerts, upgrade to a smart thermostat with a login portal.
- If a room is stuffy, add a fan or check the ventilation—not the thermostat.
