Most buyers focus on the unit price and completely miss the cost of proprietary filters, replacement sensors, and contractor familiarity. A cheaper Honeywell thermostat that requires a proprietary sensor you can only buy from one distributor will cost you more over five years than a slightly pricier model that uses standard parts.

The question everyone asks is "what's the cheapest Honeywell thermostat?" The question they should ask is "what's the total cost of ownership over five years, including filters, sensors, and service calls?"

Any final advice on efficiency for facility procurement?

Yes: standardize where you can, but don't force it. We consolidated our thermostat orders to three Honeywell models—one nonprogrammable for mechanical rooms, one programmable for offices, and one smart model for the executive floor. That cut our ordering time from about 90 minutes per month to 30 minutes. It also eliminated the data entry errors we used to have when we ordered the wrong model number.
